my friend

at one of the workshops who I really learn a lot from was telling me that people often take classes or want to do something because of someone else's effort/work, and that it's important to distinguish that especially while learning that you're not going to be the teacher; you are there to learn their technique and share their life experience/advice. Your personal style develops from your own life experiences and personality. She was saying how it's interesting that at one school, the teachers are dry and boring and their work, even though precise, reflects this. And then there are some people whose work, even though not the most precise or academic, you just can't take your eyes off of. That kind of stuff is fascinating to me, but it is true that sometimes it's so easy to get caught up in "omg I'm going to take a class from X prof because he/she is a bad@$$!" and before you know it, you've taken classes with a bunch of superstars, you haven't evaluated your own work or improved at all (because some people may be superstars but they may not know how to impart that knowledge; that's a skill in itself) and spent a tonne of energy and money. Anyways...drawings from yesterday evening. Looking at the other stuff I have to scan in and post to another blog (because we had homework) makes me sigh (dang you extra week off!).
