form and structure

Been working on these, along with my lay-ins, and studying the drawings of H0ud0n and P0nt0rm0 for plane changes and contouring (perspective and volume). Along with perspective, I'm trying to work on just getting the structure of the head right, and do a comparison because sometimes it just collapses on me with all the tone, lighting etc etc. So my prof said to just focus on the blocking in. So will do a tonne of these, along with the lay-ins. I don't want to be able to 'just get away' with doing an okay job of it, I want to nail it. But it can be so frustrating when learning. My prof is hard core and I really like it (not to mention it's wonderful to speak with someone about art and music..he is an amazing wealth of good information and quite sincere and gives GOOD direction) but it's not a disparaging way. It really feels like he is just doing it to support you and make you better at your craft. I really like that, because I was in a class once where the teaching style felt like a metaphor for psycho-logic defense/ Freudian defense mechanisms and I could literally cut the air with the prof's ego LOL (that's a HUGE red flag for me). I think that even when you are learning, there is a sense of when something feels right and when there is progress or movement forward. In that sense even though people may tell you you don't know (and in most cases you don't), your gut/intuition is really spot-on in telling you whether something is worth it or not in terms of your time and energy. I really fight (A LOT..for everything) when I am learning, (imagine a small child being thrown into a lake and being told to swim LOL). I also am the kind of student who challenges my teachers as I myself am challenged, which with the wrong teacher can be a dangerous thing. I feel that it's the difference between really engaging and growing, though, and not just following blindly what a teacher is telling you (without really understanding or attempting to know). I'm glad to fight when it means that the end result is progress.
