I LOVE Modelling! Actually, I lie (as you can see from the plethora of 3D models on my blog). It's kind of a pain in the butt but I'm trying to get better, because I realize (and have been told) that it's going to become used more and more in concepting. Something I have to live with and anticipate, I guess. Someone (who works all the time) actually made a prediction that the ones who don't know how to model may be left behind/not working soon. Interesting prediction because I actually met a multiple award-winning guy who just could not adapt to using a tablet, and so he hardly does any of the work he used to do anymore and just runs a fine arts studio now (that 'tablet thing' is just a phase anyways, right? lol). My dig painting teacher from Dworks confirmed the sentiment, saying that he keeps working there because when he is not vis-dev-ing (is that a word? LOL) he can do some orthos and simple mock ups and even a little modelling in Maya; it makes him move versatile as a designer. Plus, I really do believe that things like props or interiors are particularly well suited to 3D (hello, VWorks and even Rhino is pretty much 3D and to scale already) and plotting out perspective easily. Even J Jones said at his last workshop he's going to learn it and use it subtly in his work (but not too much so that they would want him to do their modelling for them). A girl who sat next to me in a class (she was in her 50s and went through the golden age; worked on every movie/animation I saw growing up/at every studio) told me to ensure I pick up on the 'warning signs'. She said when she first started guys who just did hand drawings and onion skinning the traditional way were seeing the tablet warning signs and warned her on their way out that they should have listened (one particular story was of a guy who used to work for a conglomerate animation studio and got booted out, and became a model, and then years later the studio hired him to inspire their artists (bittersweet story, I guess). So very interesting stuff. My friend said she saw things change too but it's easy sometimes to say "meh; it'll never happen".
This is a WIP; I started with Modo and I LOVE it, but this recent Lux merger is kind of sucky (boo hoo :(), and I'm also learning a little Zbr^sh. But if I have to give up Lux Modo, M@y@ is, I guess, the best choice (not to mention it isn't going away anytime soon and it's SUCH a diverse programme and modifiable. Also, licenses stories are creepy. I heard of one show that had a tonne of pirated software and this major software company had a surprise visit to their workspace area and saw the pirated software and charged them each 14 000 dollars for each pirated license and banned the production company from ever using their software ever again. Ouch.
