After my Entertainment Design class, I took a Digital Illustration class with Izzy Medrano. For one of our assignments, we had to design a character that would be in the Star Wars Cantina. Since I live under a rock and hadn't seen Star Wars (or the Matrix..yes, that's right..I said it.), I decided on a guy who was in a wheelchair powered by a rocket drinking a cerveza. I thought that it would be empowering to see someone in society that we typically associate as being disempowered or disadvantaged in some way in a position of strength.
I think of design as a responsibility; particularly a social one. It has the ability to change the way we see the world (think of Steve Jobs). What we create has a profound impact and I think that designers and artists should have a sense of this when they create. This was my first attempt at painting at 100 percent opacity. The background..not so much. So I could compare what happens to the piece when I do and don't paint with 100 percent opacity. It really takes a lot of courage to paint with no opacity. Anyways, enough rambling..enjoy!
