I am NOT a graphic designer
But I thought that this would be a good project for me. The whole L!0nf!sh project, especially having done a course in Illustat0r. I started with pen, scanned it in, then used PS, Illustrat0r and C0rel. I tried to make the fish/woman and have her looking into a mirror, which was the frame, paying attention to Pr!vat's visual language (no sharp points, only curves and line weight is very important). I hate Illustrat0r, but feel a lot more comfortable with it (and it's good to do things outside of your comfort zone). I should do more stuff like this. Usually I look at competitions and do the entries but never post them/send them in haha. But it's time to grow some big b@lls and put on my big girl pant!es!!!!! (eek!) You really do grow so much and learn a lot by putting your stuff out there.

drawing, chalk drawing, painting, rendering
Today was my last class in painting and drawing until two weeks from now. After working on my colour wheel (still wet),I drew a bunny rabbit, which started a chain of bunny rabbits (mine is the devil/pirate one with the carrot scarf :)
My prof let me stay a bit for his last drawing class and then I had literally 25 minutes to get to my other class from Little T0ky0 to L!nc0ln Cypress. I only got there 5 minutes late so no biggie, thankfully and it was worth it. I did my first two renders today. The programme is t!ts from the last time I used it (two years ago). We worked on clouds today.

No M0t!varti
So as it turns out, the mentor I wanted decided not to choose me, which I know I can't take personally.
I also honestly have to say I probably wasn't the best match, either.
People are often scared away by those fangs and the warts and I've learned to live with that LOL. Actually, I breathed a sigh of relief because Mr. Sp!derzer0 last minute persuaded me to take his class and I kind of um..spent the M0t!vart! money ahead of time (ba dum dum ching), and I would have had to dip into savings (yes, everyone should have one!). I am excited to meet him and we've been in touch, which is great because his last class was um..10 months ago! Plus, he's working on some of the same movies we're working on at work (double zing!)
It's often a no-brainer for me to spend on someone who is in the biz, because that's where my heart is and where I want to end up (and no no no I don't care what you @n!mation people say, I consider them a whole separate category...read "C!nema, F!lm, M0vie" by Ger@ld M@st..note he does NOT talk about any @nimated movies...maybe film ppl would be termed snobby and pretentious in that respect, but it's just kind of the way we see things..sorry.)
It's interesting; I am on this forum for all things camera/lighting/cinema related since college and one day they were having a looonnng argument (I believe the heading was "the end of pr0fessionalism") and someone was saying that in the future, someone from an!mation could win an 0scar for cinematography. The response was pretty much 'over my dead body no way is it the same as shooting something; either physically or even in terms of vfx supervision'. One DP referred to @nimation as "all graphic design" and I said "well, that doesn't hold up for things like stop-motion". But then the people I know in @nimation will often say that they 'work in the film biz'. So that's pretty interesting to me. Being in the middle ie very much a part of the biz and also having friends who are in @nimation is just kind of awkward..and weird. I've also been very fortunate that people still keep calling me to be on set and I'm very much a part of the film community, while also being involved with the art community out here in LA so it's a nice balance for me.
Speaking of movies....
Anyways...last night we had some scenes from B0nnie and Clyde with the lovely Rachel and Keith. Wow. I really don't remember too much else about these. There was some good Chardonnay last night. It was chilled too, so it was ahhh...let me shut up now....

the day Sara tortured us...
Second time in three days I've seen her. Lovely as always. At the end, I told her "you were out to punish us tonight!" and she squealed with laughter. Lots of twists, turns, reaching. I love love love her line, her elegance and sense of balance, and she gives us poses with what one of my teachers liked to speak of as l!ft and bre@th (ie the chest lifts up when you breathe/suck in and down and out when you breathe out).
Oh, working on a Master copy at home (painting), taking a sculpt/design class in a week and I think my total is something like 6 classes this semester, which I"m doing in the most affordable way (people who know me say I'm the 'bargain hunter' hehe) that I myself couldn't believe how I managed to book all of them (even a few free classes thrown in there..so proud of myself!)
Also, in one class, we're learning this programme which will essentially (in the next 5 years) replace PSh0p as a matte painting tool. The positions in many major studios are already dropping out and being made more 'generalist' positions. And now I know how some artists got the realistic look they did with their environments in their concept work...thankfully I own a free PLE of the software already (because I'm nosy and curious and went through a stage where I wanted to know what EVERY programme was...and now I just roll my eyes when someone in class goes "could you spell that again!?" Thankfully that software period didn't last and I figured out I am certainly not a modeller (I can do basic basic stuff but I don't enjoy it the way I do just the foundational stuff and designing), but it was enough to get my feet wet and not be intimidated by the GUI of a programme. It's interesting to see, though, that even the texture artists and matte people from this particular studio are all artists as well; they have graphic design backgrounds or even just paint in oils quite frequently.
Oh, and here are pics of my palette and colour wheel I've been working on for quite a while. It's a WIP. On the glass palette, I really liked the colours this week :) Reminded me of a toucan. :)
As you can see, I mixed a weaker yellow by accident with the Cad lemon yellow and then went oops and mixed the more potent one with the Cad Medium. It's interesting how little things like that can make SUCH a difference. Was learning about how to mix black with viridian also, if you don't have a black. Interesting stuff.
Anyways....

The lovely Ashph0rd...and a turn around! (da dun!)

got into
both my classes after calling for twenty minutes every two seconds at the lovely T@G. Yayy. To celebrate, I went out drawing last night. Oh, the first drawing is just a prelim for a painting I'll probably start on Wednesday with my mask :) And this model, Cat, was kind enough to come in when two of the other models flaked out. The guy who runs the workshop is VERY particular about flaky models and is very quick to drop a model with the wrong attitude and a lack of professionalism.
