studies and other stuff; shape and form
Taking a new class (started Monday; it runs for 12 weeks) so I have to do this 'leave several drawing boards all over the place' procedure, because they're a pain to walk around with all over town, as well as keep track as to which sketch pads are nearing their end at which place. Kind of funny but really worth it because I walk a lot, and walking with those boards are not the best experience (I was even thinking of doing a handlebar type contraption so they'd be easier to hold..maybe I'll do a redesign here (ha!). I've been trying to do more of C. B@rgue's plates (just focusing on one a day; repetition and comparison of shapes).
Also, went to the guild panel for this year's noms. So fantastic. They all said they mostly used (and preferred) hand drawing. H0bb!t was the only one that had to use Rhino/CAD just really because of the convenience and their workflow. Interesting stuff. And each process was quite different; some did mostly hand painting, one used a lot more sculpture (the Banyan-type roots (some of them) and the boat in L!fe of P! were sculpted). Great stuff!
I also learned that the person who did get the award this year didn't think he deserved it and almost didn't show up (ha); he'd been saying that from the beginning and crediting it more as a $et Dec award, but you know, the people from a certain uni0n who vote are so HUGE (and often aren't very aware of the process)....anyways, enough politics
Here are some studies (some from photos and some from dr@wing club. It was a $uperher0 type theme :)

yowza; studies cont'd
Still sick but feeling a little better. This is part of what was done over the past two days. What I like about posting is that I can see my mistakes glaringly by posting my stuff, which is a great way of checking my own stuff (harder to do when you don't have a prof looking over your shoulder). Looking forward to a lot of rest, even though I have drawing/painting class tomorrow morning and a full-ish weekend.

workshop last night
It's not that I've been lazy at all; I've actually had not more than 5 hours a night of sleep for a loong while. However, I've been spending more time on sculpting, as it is (at least I kind of think) helping to support my life drawing work in the form department. The only thing about sculpting is that I'm not into the whole 'progress' posting, so I'll just post it when it is done...I'm quite enjoying it and really thinking of either continuing or retaking the class (just to keep it up) next semester. Anyways, I also had to show up last night because I know (and love) this model. We share the same birthday too! :)

looking the 'wrong' way
I've been really intrigued lately by how certain things we do shape how we think. I've been looking at the work of Geh@rd Demetz lately (check it out if you haven't) and learning that sculpture is, as one professor explained "painting with shadow". I really really like that, coming from a lighting design background. Especially in architectural lighting (or even 3d projecti0n m@pping), you design based on the space; even though you're adding light, everything; even the shape of the light from the point that emanates from the actual fixture to the spillage shape on the ground, means something and is part of the whole (something that is not as important in film lighting unless you do a wide shot). Then, one of my other profs explained that he does most of his work with the piece in silhouette, so that he gets the gesture and basic form right (kind of like concept design in PS/digitally dun dun!). So in a way it all makes sense and it's quite interesting. It's interesting that one of my profs (I overheard) was talking about my form and getting the class to do more drawings 'in the round'. When one asked the other what was up with me, the other proudly said "oh, she's taking a sculpting class". So I'm interested in how it really does affect how you think about drawing the figure when you can (in a tangible way) feel around the clay with your hands and get a sense of the shape in the round, and how it affects your drawing. One guy who came all the way from C@rol!na and clearly loves it says that to him, it feels like the thing he is sculpting is so real to him. It's kind of eerie but true, and it's such a tangible, beautiful artform.
I'm def looking to continue this year. It's really something (although one girl I know said she sucked at it and hated it and she's a fine illustrator) that you can fall into and spend a lot of time on (everyone in the lab always goes omg what time is it!? after a couple hours and we freak out because time has passed so quickly), and every day you just want to make it better.
