another head

I have

an obsession with LGaga. Yeah. I said it. So I've decided to dedicate an entire sketch book to her. She has such interesting expressions, great to study for costume/character design, great movement and well, I love her because well, I went to school on the East Coast and there are so many things about her that remind me of that love/hate coast. LOL. Anyways, I tried to rotate some of these but I don't know if they will..but oh well...in my sketch book they're right sided up. Haha..

some more

material studies. I am really not happy with the glass cube..argh! I would have bombed if I worked on Tron LOL. But I also did another face...so working and pushing ahead. I did a bunch of drawings today..but will upload those at another time. I think first you fight it (the process) because you're not used to it and you're frustrated and you keep pushing.... and then it becomes easier...so um..working on that.

really

enjoying the character class. We got our homework yesterday..and it was a lot, and I worked yesterday evening until 1am, did laundry at 6:30am (ha! No one was up yet!) and continued working. Finally, at 4:57pm, I am done with the basics of what he wanted. I'm a bit unhappy with some things, so I'll probably be doing a bit extra of certain things as I have time during the week. This Memorial day, (which I understand back home because we give out Poppies but I'm kind of confused in the US by what cooking/searing meat over a hot grill and being hung over to the point of vomiting have to do with veterans who died in the war for us) was an awesome day to just paint all day. I do have some sketches to post, but I'm lazy today and the light isn't the best to snapshot the sketches in my book and then post. I also have some design work from my other class, which was also fun. I really enjoyed what my prof said about the difference between doing and trying. He said that a lot of people DO but don't TRY. Trying is about pushing beyond what is comfortable for you...reaching way beyond that. Sometimes (as was the case for him) it is because you have no other choice...there are no other options. I relate to that a lot.
I really liked that a lot because I feel like the Universe is always making me TRY. Seriously. Every time I DO, it kicks me in the butt, my world turns upside down, and I'm in try-mode. In fact, besides growing up back home, since I've moved to the US, I can't remember at all any time where I really felt 100 percent 'comfortable', like I could just 'smoke a joint', drink beer all day and watch tv. It has been a run around, but it has helped in a good way to keep me on my toes. So that's good :)

I am so tired

but I'm going to get up in four hours and paint the last part of my assignment..so that I'm free to do extra if I want (aka more sketching and painting). On another note, this is just something I did in class with not much time (because the professor took FOREVER just to get to silhouettes...I think he didn't want to come in to teach today) in my free classes :) And the coolest news...someone in my office complained about 'the girl who is always drawing' (even though I got the best review in my entire department). An actor friend (who is pretty well known..he was in a movie that swept the Oscars last year) of someone in my office said "she's creative and talented...you should be encouraging her!" I have so much more respect for this particular actor now. :) The human will is an incredibly strong thing, someone was telling me on my ride home. If you really really want something badly, you will mostly get it (although not always). Interesting how the Universe works that way. Anyways, this is not helping my sleep deprivation problem.

move you(r?) LAZY BUM!!

Hahah. No, I haven't been slacking off. Quite the contrary. Classes have begun for me again so I'll be posting less, but hopefully there will be progress over the next couple of months. I'm in Stevie's Character Design class (woot Steve!!!!) and Form and Design, and taking a workshop with Jamie Jones at CDA. I am SO excited! It's been a day since I had assigned homework and I'm actually almost done with all my homework (I got up at 4am this morning to start painting and drawing hahaha). So what does that mean? I'll do DOUBLE or TRIPLE of course! To the finish line and beyond (makes silly sci-fi geeky sounds LOL)

another film study

an aside

I thought I would take a post to acknowledge one of the greats who inspired me when I was young; Alexander McQueen. I was looking up film references and remembered the moody lighting and theatrical nature of his work. His work was always grounded in a story, and it was epic. People like Tom Ford came from the world of architecture (which is clear in his design; he uses symmetry and clean cut-lines and his colours are very stable and grounded) but McQueen was just so imaginative that as a young person growing up, I just thought he was the coolest thing to ever happen to fashion (sorry LaChapelle and Sandy Dalal). I remember growing up and hanging on to the every word of Fashion File (back when E! had other programmes besides trashy reality shows or chicks half naked during Spring break yelling "Woo!") as they travelled from country to country showing the designs of the latest and very chic fashion designers. I just wonder why no concept artists really study this stuff. Oh well...I'm done with my crumpet and tea...back to reality. lol. May he RIP forever :)

semi quick one

I had no class today so spent my time instead (okay, so let me not lie...I did watch a bit of "A League of Their Own", shot by another DP I really admire :)...teared up a bit and then started painting) doing a wannabe catwoman movie frame.

sketch dump mwahahaha!

took a while

I guess I was a bit down this week. Sometimes I do feel frustrated with everything. I can't exactly afford a fancy school or these fancy classes (don't even make me get into the intimidation of sitting next to someone with your tiny Graphire while they are toting around a 24 inch Cintiq and looking down on you while they paint LOL (that should be banned). I guess the best solution is to keep going and hey, if all else I did spend this week putting in my usual 8 to 10 drawing. My boss told me that he's absolutely sure I'll succeed, because I want it more. Well, I don't know about that, but at least I'm not arrogant lol. I saw the Terpning exhibition yesterday, and the guy was just one of the sweetest, nicest guys ever. Someone that talented just being extremely nice. Sure, he has been painting for 60 years, but it seems like a lot of the successful ones are really nice, which is great and very encouraging. Oh, and they also didn't have everything on a silver plate. Hope everyone had a great week.

another film study...again

I did this one in class last night while everyone was learning how to use the Liquify tool and transform things around..lol. I was surprised he let me continue when he asked 'where's yours' (which I was half arsedly doing simultaneously) and then he said "I need your brushes!" (of course, because how a piece comes out depends on one's brushes *insert sarcasm*). This was fun to do. Working of course every day on getting better.

another film study: girl crush

Yes, I do have a bit of a girl-crush on Lucy Lawless Hahah. It's hard to focus on both faces (your point of focus in a portrait) and the lush material of the dress. Sooo frustrating! Argh. Ah, to get better :) I don't mind pushing along...it's so much fun!

I am SO excited

About Howard Terpning's exhibition this coming Saturday. But this here is not Terpning related-it's Bama..again..and this is my Sketch Dump for the week (excluding some doodles in between my focused sketches of some things I'd prefer not to post LOL). I'm working on another film study (at my rough-in stage), while getting over the depression that somehow within one minute 20 spots were taken and I didn't get into a class I wanted this semester. Oh well...there is always next semester...and wine. LOL.
