sketch dump
some James Bama studies I've been working on in pencil. I LOVE his work and I love that there is so much depth to his observation. Even as an observer I think what draws us in is that you can see the level of trust and compassion between subject and documenter.
Such an incredible storyteller.

another film study
Had fun with this one. Reminded me of the Sargent concept of keeping most detail where you want the eye to go so tried to do that. Working on improving, as usual :)

Did these two in class while people were learning how to paint a sphere and an eye. A repeat class for me to keep up my painting but decided to get some hours in this way. I realized a while ago that what appeals to me most about characters (or even creatures or animals) is a sense of what would be going through their head. I don't care much for the characters that just stand posed with nothing but blatant vapidity etched across their face, like someone is presenting them as a maquette. Could explain a bit of why I liked MK's work so much for Thor. Odin is clearly pondering and full of thought. It brought another level to his work. I am so tired of seeing 'cool poses' that are really quite empty.

another one

Restarted the new term of Concept Design 101 at Studio Arts with Alex Ruiz just so that I could hang out with my buddy aka partner in crime, Suzanne. Hahaha. And get some sweet gossip on the show we're both connected to. She surprised me in class because I didn't think she would show up. So stoked! Another term of mischief. Mwahaha.
film study using some of techniques from BP workshop

So I'm going to continue with the techniques I learned during the workshop; a more Notan approach to painting and see where it leads me. This is another film still from the film "Biutiful" (love the palette and well, Javier is a Pisces like me so what can be wrong lol). I had SO much fun in the workshop and it made me realize that if I could stick it through day one where it's supposed to tire you out and enjoy it so much I really do LOVE painting. I spoke to one girl, Becky, at the workshop, and I said to her that "I hate it when you have a cup of tea and you are painting..." and she finished "and when you pick it up again it's cold". I couldn't believe it! It was wonderful to be around people who felt the SAME way about painting :) This is my first since the workshop (I know..slacker...I did draw during the day yesterday, though)...so more to come :)
